Synopsis: The Search is the first-ever film made in western China's Tibet Autonomous Region to have been shot entirely with a Tibetan crew and in the Tibetan language. The film picks up the story of a photographer and a director traveling from village to village looking for actors to star in a film based on the Tibetan opera Drimé Kunden, a legendary account of a prince who selflessly gives away his children and his own eyes to those in need.
Director's Bio: Pema Tseden's debut film The Silent Holy Stones, garnered much praise and awards including Best Directorial Debut at the 25th Golden Rooster Awards, Asian New Talent Award for Best Director at the 9th Shanghai International Film Festival, Special Jury Award at the 8th Changchun Film Festival, and Best First Feature at the 13th Beijing College Student Film Festival. Since then he has continued to write and direct critically acclaimed films such as Soul Searching and Tharlo.
Grand Prize Winner at the Shanghai International Film Festival and Special Jury Prize winner at the Bangkok International Film Festival, 2009.
"At times, the film feels like “Tibetan Idol”, with the film crew recording bizarre and amusing auditions in frost-swept brick courtyards, cavernous rehearsal rooms and dimly lit anterooms." —All Things Considered, NPR
