DIRECTOR

Takashi Miike

Miike was born in Osaka in 1960. He trained at the private film school founded and chaired by Shohei Imamura and went on to work as Imamura’s first assistant on ‘Zegen’ (1987) and ‘Black Rain’ (1989). He spent the first half of the 90’s shooting made-for-video features, or video cinema, - which got him used to tight schedules and budgets. In 1995, he was given the chance to direct his first regular feature film - SHINJUKU TRIAD SOCIETY - and he hasn’t looked back since.

Miike never forfeited quality and artistic merit in exchange for quantity. In fact, his cinematic style is as clearly edged out and more evident than ever. Film critic Tony Rayns once stated in a ‘Sight and Sound’ article which introduced Miike to many international film enthusiasts, “Miike may be as prolific as Fassbinder was in his heyday, but the films he makes are closer in spirit to the best by the veteran fringe-Hollywood director Joseph H. Lewis: genre movies, made on a for-hire basis, with the generic elements left on auto- pilot while the director busies himself with form, rhythm, texture and the implications of the characters’ sexual pathologies. Miike makes ‘termite art' rather than the kind of ‘white elephant art’ beloved of A-list festival programmers.”
