Asian Pop-up Cinema co-host a new partnership with Sorry Not Sorry (SNS), an emerging not-for-profit film platform dedicated to supporting works telling different stories about Asian lived experiences.
From October 3 to October 9, a total of 16 short films from the first SNS selection will stream online for free in the U.S. at APUC’s Eventive platform. The selection showcases a lineup that destabilizes the dominant identity labels and shares Asian lived experiences from the globe. The four sections of the 2022 SNS selection, (Dis)placing Time, Familiar Strangers, Embodies Womanhood, and Asian Queer Phenomenologies, respectively follow the spatio-temporal flows of memories and experiences, and the bodies and feelings of Asian womanhood, motherhood, and queerhood.
“SNS is rooted in communal care. Our selected films collectively share one purpose: by unapologetically telling our own stories, we shake up the imposed labels of “Asianness'' as a monolithic category.” says Brandy Wang, the Founder and Curator of SNS, “The collaboration with APUC provides an important and timely opportunity to present these powerful and multi-faceted shorts to a broader audience who share the care and passion for Asian cinema.”
SLATE ONE
Slate One touches on two main themes, one being (Dis)Placing Time and the other being Familiar Strangers. We think through the oxymorons to experience the in-betweenness of Asian lived experiences caught by family, social, and historical changes. In (Dis)Placing Time, the works locate memories in bodies, artifacts, and places that think through various struggles, historical moments, and everyday life. This is an effort to bring representations back to many invisible and local temporalities. Familiar Strangers spells out experiences of diasporic Asian experiences that concern the hybridity of identities, citizenship, and the feelings of being the Other.

SLATE TWO
Slate Two focuses on gender and sexuality, body, and feelings. Embodied Womanhood looks into the bodies of women and mothers, which is increasingly potent in the contemporary biopolitical context, yet often lacking of Asian experiences. Asian Queer Phenomenology embraces various feelings, affects, and emotions of being queer. Not to draw a definite line between bodily and emotional experiences, though each work orients its storytelling in unique ways. This selection showcases an intersectional lens into Asian identities.
