During the 1950s, the Kuomintang, Taiwan’s ruling political party, persecuted political dissidents in the name of national security. Upon learning of her brother’s execution in custody, a young girl travels north to Taipei to retrieve his body. During her journey, she meets a rickshaw driver who becomes a friend in need.
The winner of four Golden Horse Awards – including Best Original Screenplay and Best Film – veteran director Chen Yu-hsun’s ambitious drama revisits one of Taiwan’s most painful historical traumas with gentle humor drawn from everyday life. More importantly, it’s a timely reminder about the importance of tenacity and resilience in the face of turmoil and authoritarianism.
