Will their differences finally be resolved, or will old wounds be laid bare again?
Director Yukihiro Morigaki takes a restrained approach to a chaotic dysfunctional family with his adaptation of Haruna Terachi’s novel. BIOS
Roh Young-wan, Director
Roh is a filmmaker who has consistently turned his gaze toward the structural contradictions of Korean society and the inner lives of those left behind. Since 2015, he has been deeply involved in projects that confront historical trauma—most notably as head of planning and production on Spirits’ Homecoming and A long way around, both dealing with the unresolved legacy of the Japanese military sexual slavery system. Spirits’ Homecoming remains one of the most successful crowdfunded films in Korean cinema, embodying the power of collective memory and solidarity. Roh later participated in The Singer, an ambitious attempt at North-South Korean co-production. Though the collaboration remained incomplete, the effort itself raised essential questions about the role of art in cultural reconciliation and healing on a divided peninsula. In 2025, Roh made his directorial debut with the feature film Halo, which won the Best Film Award in the Asian Future section at the 38th Tokyo International Film Festival. Guided by the philosophy that “technique should remain simple, while story and emotion must run deep,” he embraces a minimalist, raw realism in both style and spirit. Halo tells the story of a young man burdened by a forgotten family legacy, navigating a broken household and an indifferent society in search of faint light. Through this quiet journey, Roh offers a sharp yet tender lens on how the shadows of history continue to fracture the present.

After his grandfather’s death, 24-year-old Susumu inherits his grandfather’s position as head abbot of a local Buddhist temple. From the challenges he faces on the job, Susumu realizes that being a community’s spiritual leader takes much more than he imagined.
Based on Missei Shirakawa’s autobiographical essay, this enlightening drama highlights that religious leaders must often strike the difficult balance between human feelings (or desires) and spiritual obligations. Filmed in a hushed and unhurried style, Makabe immerses audiences in the serenity of a Buddhist temple while observing the inner emotional tempest of his protagonist.

Brush of the God (カミノフデ ~怪獣たちのいる島)
TRIBUTE TO THE LATE KEIZO MURASE
Keizo Murase (left) with “Brush of the God” producer Daisuke Sato (right). Sato accepted Murase’s Lifetime Achievement Award on Murase’s behalf at Asian Pop-Up Cinema on April 13, 2025.
Today Asian Pop-up Cinema is proud to present a lifetime achievement award to Keizo Murase for his many contributions as a sculptor, model maker and director to the Japanese monster movies – or kaiju eiga -- we all know and love, including the most famous series of all, Godzilla.
Born in 1935 in Tokachi, Hokkaido, Murase joined the Toho studio as a part-timer in the special effects department in 1957. He became a full-timer the following year and worked on such iconic films as “Mothra,” “King Kong versus Godzilla,” “Matango” and “Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster.”
In 1965, after working on “Gamera,” the first kaiju movie of the Daiei studio, he went independent and established together with two partners established the modeling company EX Productions.
In addition to his activities in Japan, Murase contributed to monster films made abroad, including the first-ever Korean kaiju film, the 1967 “Yongary, Monster from the Deep.” In the early 1970s he also worked on the iconic “Kamen Rider” and “Ultraman” TV series. In 1972 he left EX and set up his own production company, Twenty.
While working on the 1977 film “The Mighty Peking Man” Murase came up with the idea for the tokusatsu or special effects film that was to become of “Brush of the God.” But the film only started to become a reality with a crowdfunding campaign in 2020. After other funding raising efforts I won’t detail here, Murase was finally able to complete his first film as a director and “Brush of the God” had its world premiere at the Osaka Asian Film Festival in March of last year.
Unfortunately, Keizo Murase died on October 14, 2024 at the age of 89 before he could hear all the praise his film would garner both at home and abroad. Still, in his late eighties he was able to carry through with a long-time dream and become an inspiration to filmmakers everywhere.
We are proud to present the culmination of that dream, “Brush of the God,” tonight. And to present its maker with the Asian Pop-up Cinema Lifetime Achievement Award. The film’s producer, Daisuke Sato, will accept on his behalf. So let’s give a big round of applause to Keizo Murase!

Director Junichi Yasuda and actress Yuno Sakura are scheduled to introduce the film and participate in a post-film Q&A.
SYNOPSIS:
In the Edo period, a samurai is struck by lightning and transported to the present day. Thanks to his “authentic” outfit and speaking style, the samurai ends up finding his calling as a “kiraeyaku,” a swordsman in the samurai genre whose job is to get killed on-screen.
A tribute to Seizo Fukumoto, the late samurai genre actor who died more than 50,000 times on-screen, Junichi Yasuda’s high-concept comedy is a refreshing twist on both the time-traveling and the samurai genres. The self-funded film opened on one screen and slowly grew in popularity on word-of-mouth, becoming the sleeper hit of 2024.
Junichi Yasuda, Director/Screenwriter
Born in Kyoto in 1967. After graduating from Osaka University of Economics, he worked at various jobs before starting his own videography business. His work ranges from kindergarten recitals to bridal photography, corporate videos, event video production, direction and design, multi-cam event recording and broadcasting, and production and distribution of low-budget films. He owns his own equipment, including six professional video cameras, five cine cameras, dozens of lenses, lighting equipment, dollies, cranes, switchers, and intercoms. In 2014, he founded Mirai Eigasha. In 2023, upon his father's passing, he took over his family's rice farming business. Farming rice fields that are too large takes up a lot of time, making it difficult to work on the video productions, and with rice prices so low that they are in the red, the situation continues to be uncertain due to tight household finances. “If Samurai in Time doesn't become a hit, I won't be able to continue growing rice.”
