After his grandfather’s death, 24-year-old Susumu inherits his grandfather’s position as head abbot of a local Buddhist temple. From the challenges he faces on the job, Susumu realizes that being a community’s spiritual leader takes much more than he imagined.
Based on Missei Shirakawa’s autobiographical essay, this enlightening drama highlights that religious leaders must often strike the difficult balance between human feelings (or desires) and spiritual obligations. Filmed in a hushed and unhurried style, Makabe immerses audiences in the serenity of a Buddhist temple while observing the inner emotional tempest of his protagonist.
